[3Devo] New SLS Powder Recycling Process Makes 3D Printing Green and Sustainable

【3Devo】New SLS Powder Recycling Process Paves the Way for Green and Sustainable 3D Printing

Waste generation is a major challenge in 3D printing, especially with SLS and Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) technologies, which produce 60% residual powder, leading to significant material waste and disposal problems.
3devo states that this development addresses the issue of SLS powder waste, with the potential to reduce the environmental impact and operational costs for industries using 3D printing.
To promote sustainable development in additive manufacturing, the newly launched process converts discarded SLS powder into reusable filament.
This provides a practical and environmentally friendly alternative for manufacturers in the aerospace, automotive, medical, and education sectors.

3devo's Recycling Solution

One of the main advantages of 3devo's recycling solution is the ability to expand experimentation and application possibilities. By converting waste SLS powder into filament, users are no longer limited by high costs and limited supply of new raw materials. This allows for more frequent prototype modifications and trials, encourages greater customization, and enables complex projects that would otherwise incur very high material costs using traditional methods.

Through this novel process, 3devo addresses a significant barrier by providing a viable recycling solution, enabling various industries to significantly reduce waste and contribute to a more sustainable future. The recycled filament maintains high quality and meets the demands of various applications, so manufacturers can ensure their prints remain performing well and reliably.

A notable success story involves a new customer in the United States who had been seeking a sustainable solution for SLS waste powder for years. 3devo's material experts were able to meet this need and demonstrate the practical application and effectiveness of the recycling process.

At Formnext 2023, 3devo introduced the Filament Maker TWO. The Filament Maker TWO is an enhanced version of their filament production technology, featuring advanced functions for better control and precision, tailored for research, education, and production.
The 3Devo Plastic Shredder GP20 plastic shredder can recycle plastic of any shape and size into granular 3D printing material. This dual design combines a smart plastic shredder with an integrated granulator, allowing you to focus on your needs. The shredder's functionality gives you the freedom and flexibility to integrate it into any project in any industry.

Responsible Growth in Additive Manufacturing Through Material Sustainability

In addition to 3Devo, more manufacturers are striving to make the 3D printing industry green and sustainable.

UK 3D printing filament manufacturer Filamentive has launched Economy PLA, a 3D printing filament made from up to 99.99% post-industrial recycled materials. This eco-friendly filament is available in black and white, sold on the Filamentive website and authorized retailers on 1 kg spools.
Economy PLA maintains high quality and performance while reducing pollution risks. Previously, the company also launched PLA Tough filament made from renewable sugarcane, which is biodegradable and packaged in recyclable cardboard spools.

Montreal-based recycled filament manufacturer Nefilatek has developed 3D printing filaments made from 100% recycled plastic. The company launched Nefila HIPS Black (High Impact Polystyrene) and Nefila PC (Polycarbonate) filaments, featuring reusable spool holders and eco-friendly packaging. HIPS filament, sourced from electronic waste in Montreal, has impact resistance and heat resistance comparable to standard ABS, and can be smoothed with eco-friendly oil.
Furthermore, Nefila PC, made from recycled polycarbonate, boasts solid mechanical properties and a wide temperature resistance range (-50°C to +130°C), suitable for technical applications. These filaments offer eco-friendly alternatives, reducing the environmental footprint of 3D printing while maintaining high performance.

By focusing on the sustainability of materials and filaments, the 3D printing industry can look forward to long-term environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and economic viability, ensuring that industry growth is responsible and beneficial for future generations.
