[3D Scanning] 3DMakerpro to Launch New Low-Cost Full-Color Spatial Scanner

【3D Scanning】3DMakerpro to Launch New Low-Cost Full-Color Spatial Scanner

Formnext 2024 just concluded in November, with various companies introducing new products covering the entire additive manufacturing ecosystem.
3D scanner manufacturer 3DMakerpro unveiled a particularly interesting product.
The company launched the Eagle, a new LiDAR-based spatial scanner for indoor and outdoor environments.

During the exhibition in Frankfurt, 3D Printing Industry interviewed Wen Tianshi, Global Marketing Director, and Luo Wei, Head of 3DMakerpro’s R&D Department.
They emphasized that the Eagle will stand out in the 3D scanner market due to its wide scanning range, portability, impressive full-color texture camera, and ability to operate in various environments.
Additionally, the discussion outlined novel 3D scanning applications, where 3DMakerpro has expanded from the hobbyist field to industrial manufacturing and real estate markets.

Wen and Luo Wei also provided a sneak peek at 3DMakerpro's upcoming products, including a new consumer-grade 3D scanner and the company's foray into the medical field.
"We believe spatial scanning is very important and one of the main scenarios we expect in the near future," Wen added.

Wen explained that the product is set to launch on Kickstarter, reportedly with "a huge price gap between the Eagle and other spatial scanners."
This will lower the barrier to entry for 3D scanning indoor and outdoor spaces. The Eagle will be available for between $1500 and $2500.

In addition to the Eagle, 3DMakerpro also showcased an additional "spatial scanner" at their Formnext booth.
While details about this larger product than the Eagle are currently limited, Wen explained that it will incorporate more advanced features for higher-quality scans. This scanner will be released after the official launch of the Eagle.

The Eagle marks a significant shift from 3DMakerpro's existing consumer-grade product portfolio, which includes Moose, Mole, and Seal 3D scanners.
Wen outlined that the new product does not focus on scanning individual objects but is designed as a 3D scanner "for entire environments."

By combining a 905 nm laser source with four high-quality 48MP texture cameras, 3DMakerpro's Eagle offers a scanning range of 80 to 140 meters and a scanning radius of up to 70 meters.
It can achieve 3D scanning accuracy of 2cm at 10m, 3cm at 20m, and 5cm at 40m.
This allows users to capture various internal and external environments, from factories and production facilities to luxury apartments and mining sites.

A key advantage of the Eagle is its 12000 mAh (Milliampere-hour) built-in battery.
Unlike previous 3DMakerpro scanners that had to be connected to a power supply during use, the new system supports one hour of wireless 3D scanning.
This enhances its flexibility, offering greater freedom to users who want to scan complex spaces in hard-to-reach areas.

With dimensions of 115 mm x 181 mm x 106 mm and a weight of just 1.5 kg, the Eagle is a handheld product optimized for mobile scanning in various spaces.
"You just hold the scanner, walk around the city and streets, capture the desired environment, and quickly generate a point cloud for a 3D model," Wen commented. The Eagle can capture 200,000 data points per second.
3DMakerpro provides proprietary software for the Eagle, which can export 3D data in PLY and OBJ file formats for colored point clouds, color textures, Gaussian splatting, and panoramic tour data.
Notably, Wen explained that the company is currently developing a new data exchange platform to support the demands of spatial scanning.
"With spatial scanning, users get more data and may want to make modifications to the 3D model," 3DMakerpro's marketing director explained. "So we are currently testing the platform for this software."

Unlocking New 3D Scanning Applications
Wen stated that since 2023, 3DMakerpro has witnessed a growing demand for affordable spatial scanning capabilities.
The company decided to move beyond 3D scanners for single objects, focusing instead on "expanding user scenarios and opening up more possibilities for the 3D scanning industry."
Luo Wei added that there is a gap in the spatial 3D scanner market.
"There aren't many brands, companies, or products focused on this area, so we are trying to enhance these capabilities by investing and developing them ourselves."

One key application they highlighted is related to the real estate market.
The Eagle can accurately map the interiors and exteriors of houses and apartments and convert them into 3D models.
Agents and developers can then use this information when presenting properties to potential clients.

They pointed to additional use cases in digital twins and digital assets.
3DMakerpro has already attracted interest from clients looking to digitize factories to optimize floor plan efficiency and quality control.
Demand also comes from the mining industry. Companies operating mines around the world can take months to get accurate feedback and quality reports.
"You can't fly to these mines every day." Thus, Eagle scanners allow these clients to collect data and create detailed 3D models, which can then be used to visualize and fix problems from any location.

The virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) markets within the tech industry are also growing rapidly. The Eagle will be a unique content creation device for VR and 3D filmmaking applications.
Mr. Wei stated future plans to develop a "3D motion camera" to further address these creative applications.
He believes that 3D modeling will become the primary medium for expressing content, and 3D scanning will play a crucial role in supporting this process.
Wen agreed with his assessment, tracing the evolution of visual expression from "pictures, to digital images, to video, and now to three dimensions."

The Future of 3DMakerpro
What does 3DMakerpro's future trajectory look like? Wen explained that the company has "two directions," one focusing on the consumer-grade product portfolio and the other on "more advanced technology."

On the consumer side, 3DMakerpro will launch a new 3D scanner next year, enriching its existing portfolio of low-cost, high-precision products.
Wen stated that this will become the "true definition of consumer-grade," further making 3D scanning accessible to more people.

On the other hand, 3DMakerpro is also working on developing 3D scanners for medical applications, marking the company's debut in the healthcare industry.
They also pointed to a new "all-in-one 3D scanner" that has been under development since late last year.
This will include "features users have never seen before," offering "more advanced technology and greater 3D scanning possibilities."
