【3D Printing Applications】SLS 3D Printed Parts: A Great Helper for Firefighters!

【3D Printing Applications】A Heroic Contributor – SLS 3D Printed Parts!

Firefighters' safety relies on higher quality equipment, especially during the peak of wildfire season (when grasslands or forests catch fire due to dry, hot conditions). A fast and effective water jet is, of course, indispensable. How does SLS 3D printing technology help speed up the manufacturing process of water pump impellers three times faster than traditional prototyping?

The enormous losses caused by natural disasters are well-known, with particularly dangerous forest fires or wildfires not only causing injuries, burns, choking, and even death to humans, but also affecting wildlife and even leading to the degradation of natural resources. Wildfires also incur costs; according to the Forest Research Institute, direct losses per 1 hectare can be as high as $5,000, while indirect ecological losses can reach up to $25,000.

Rescue teams and fire brigades often use buoyant water pumps to combat wildfires, which can individually draw large volumes of water, about 1200 dm3 per minute. Therefore, improving the function of water pumps is crucial, and this requires linking their physical properties (such as pressure and efficiency) with engine power (e.g., engine speed).

To address this engineering challenge, the blade shape of the water pump impeller had to be redesigned. In a typical prototyping process, engineers would have to follow eight consecutive work steps, including 2D documentation, followed by casting and post-processing. However, 3D printing helps reduce this to just two processes for rapid completion: creating a 3D model and then directly 3D printing it, by omitting machining, polishing, and drilling, significantly accelerating the production of parts.

The SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) 3D printing technology used by the Sinterit Lisa 3D printer helps achieve this goal. Printed components have a smooth surface texture, and due to the physical strength of SLS powder forming and its mechanical functionality, it enables actual testing of the water pump and determines the final design of the impeller.

In this case, a 30% improvement in the production process of the impeller makes a huge difference, reducing from 8 production steps to 2, while ensuring printing accuracy. Without the need for support materials, or additional post-processing like removal and sanding, this makes the Sinterit Lisa an excellent choice for water pump manufacturers. And if any design changes or rapid prototyping are needed, making adjustments directly in 3D software is definitely easy, time-saving, and cost-effective.

We are happy to share examples of various practical applications of 3D printing in industry and daily life. These changes not only contribute to technological advancement and human development but also help in disaster relief and environmental improvement. In addition, the Sinterit Lisa has already been successfully applied in medical development. If you are interested in related content, please refer to our other articles.
