Since 2015, Ultimaker has been present at every Make48, and we are proud to be part of the competition again this year!
What is Make48? It's a 48-hour invention competition where teams of 2 to 4 people are given a problem and then have 48 hours to design a new product that solves the problem.
Participants are also responsible for developing a business plan and pitching the product to a panel of judges at the end of the 48 hours, explaining why it is the best solution.
Throughout the process, teams can use multiple Ultimaker printers for prototyping and parts, including the Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 3.
Ultimaker printers are available to Make48 contestants.
The entire process is a great opportunity for competing teams to discover how digital fabrication tools, such as Ultimaker, can accelerate their workflow when creating a new product.
Including our past participation, we are always excited to be on-hand and demonstrate how valuable high-tech tools like 3D printers are when creating functional prototypes.
Within the 48 hours, teams also have access to 'Tool Techs' that help them overcome bottlenecks and fill in any lack of skills.
Having completed five rounds of the competition so far, the team behind Make48 originally decided to document this process as it is a testament to the accelerated education that happens through time restriction.
The purpose of Make48 is to foster a learning environment and share the benefits of this competition with people beyond the participants, which is why they recently began documenting the 48-hour event into a proper "Make48" show.
The series quickly gained momentum, with the eight-episode premiere season airing on American Public Television this September.
Make48 is expected to reach 80% of the US public television market, or approximately 95 million homes by the end of the first quarter!
Viewers will be able to see everything involved not only in creating a product but also in producing and selling it to consumers.
