[3-in-1] Snapmaker Artisan Hands-On Review — CNC Function

【3-in-1】Snapmaker Artisan Hands-on Review — CNC Function
A machine that combines 3D printing, laser cutting and engraving, and CNC machining

Following our previous article: Snapmaker Artisan Hands-on Review — Laser Cutting and Engraving Functions, this time we will introduce the last function of the Artisan: CNC machining! This article is based on hands-on tests by All3DP, Tom's Hardware, and Techradar Pro, and it's the final article on the Artisan. Below, we'll explain its results!

What you need to know about CNC machining with Snapmaker...

Similar to previous Snapmaker models, the CNC mode is the easiest for beginners to pick up. CNC carving is the least known of the Artisan's three functions. While there are many laser machines and 3D printers to compare against, when it comes to CNC, things get a bit trickier. However, just like the laser module, the CNC module locks into place, and the quick-release base plate of the laser machine can also be quickly swapped for the CNC option.

Once the module is installed, calibration is required. This process is surprisingly simple, taking only a few minutes to complete. Once done, you can start laying out your designs! Using Luban's built-in tools, you can once again draw your creations in a similar way to using the laser module. Once ready, you can use the touchscreen to set the machine's actions.

CNC Machining Function Hands-on Review

The Snapmaker CNC function is surprisingly easy to get started with, and after some time cutting shapes in wood and plastic, you'll realize there's a lot of creative room. However, the 200W power is a bit lacking. While it can handle intricate details, it would be better if it could handle some heavier metals, even just 3mm thin sheets. Nevertheless, considering this is a 3-in-1 machine, the CNC capability is impressive, demonstrating the ease of use of the Luban software.

Snapmaker Luban software is at the heart of the system, allowing you to interact with each module and purpose of the machine. Best of all, the software interface is consistent across all different functions. This makes it easy to master manufacturing techniques you might otherwise be unfamiliar with. Another part of the system is, of course, the large 7-inch touchscreen next to the machine. This enhances the user experience, allowing you to easily navigate different settings, monitor progress, and make adjustments when needed.

Returning to the CNC aspect, the module is primarily used for wood but can also engrave acrylic and soft stone. The full list of supported materials is as follows: wood (walnut, beech, pine), HDF, MDF, plywood, jade, carbon fiber, acrylic, epoxy tooling board, and PCB.

To use the CNC mode, you need to change the tool head and the build plate. The Snapmaker Artisan has a wooden work surface with holes for mounting special clamps to secure your material. Unlike the laser and 3D printing tool heads, the machine waits until your work is ready for cutting before calibrating. After the material is clamped to the work surface, you will be prompted to set the origin. Next, you will run a toolpath above the clamps to see if everything is in place. Finally, you can set the Z-height, which is similar to setting the Z-height on a 3D printer, using a piece of paper between the CNC head and the material you are carving.

When using CNC, the emergency stop button on the control module can be very useful, allowing you to quickly stop the head before it hits the clamps.

Snapmaker Luban has preset settings for different types of tool heads to help you get started. The sample model provided by Snapmaker is the Luban Lock, a puzzle carved from the provided 10mm MDF board. This piece took only 36 minutes to carve, and its edges were perfectly smooth.

Finally, let's summarize!

Summary

The Snapmaker Artisan is an innovative 3-in-1 machine that builds upon the functions, features, and size of the Snapmaker 2.0, allowing you to perform 3D printing, laser engraving, and CNC on a single machine. For these three modules and uses, the high-precision characteristic truly stands out. While its speed might not be the fastest compared to dedicated options, it's still quite good. The quality achieved for each use is partly due to its robust build quality and user-friendly interface, especially the excellent Luban software. Although the initial cost is higher, the Artisan's versatility and performance truly justify the price, especially when you need three machines but have limited space.

Snapmaker Artisan Three-in-One 3D Printer

The Artisan is a huge leap forward compared to its predecessor. Switching between different modes is quick and easy, and there's no longer a need for fist-sized screws. This 3D printer is massive, capable of printing in two colors, and features an all-metal hot end. The enclosure is now also included with the machine, making it easier to print engineering-grade materials. The laser is faster and more powerful, capable of cutting 8mm wood and acrylic. The CNC function is 300% more powerful and twice as fast. However, when you consider the space saved by combining all three machines, plus the customized software that runs all the equipment, it all makes perfect sense.

However, once you find a large enough space for the Artisan, whether you are a hobbyist looking to explore new creative ideas or a professional needing a 3-in-1 machine, the Snapmaker Artisan is a great choice!
