【3DEVO】Filament Maker Two Promotes Customized 3D Printing Filament Production

Dutch technology company 3devo has launched the Filament Maker Two, aiming to enable users to produce their own 3D printing filaments from pellets or powder, while enhancing stability, efficiency, and customization.
For years, 3devo has been producing compact filament makers, establishing its equipment as a mainstay for polymer and filament companies worldwide. 3devo's machines allow these companies to produce small batches of innovative filaments for testing, research, and development.
Filament Maker TWO

Filament Maker Two
This new device was developed based on feedback from original Filament Maker ONE users and features significant technical upgrades to address the challenges of filament extrusion.
The Filament Maker Two aims to improve in several areas.
Key enhancements include a powerful drive system that combines a new stepper motor and gearbox to deliver up to three times the torque and ensure minimal speed fluctuations.
This results in an extremely stable rotational speed, reducing inconsistencies in filament quality.

The extended extruder screw, lengthened by 50 mm, enables optimal mixing and flow stability, leading to more consistent filament diameter.
The longer screw also creates a thermal break between the heating zone and the hopper, preventing premature melting and maintaining a steady material flow.
Combined with automatic filament tensioning, the Filament Maker Two can produce 3 kg spools of filament.

Greater Torque

The Filament Maker Two's intuitive touchscreen interface offers easier control, providing relevant extrusion data, notifications, and guidance.
Advanced monitoring capabilities include a 3-axis optical sensor that measures filament ovality and diameter with 10-micron precision.
This sensor detects spool ovality and provides thermal measurements to maintain optimal temperature stability during extrusion.

Touchscreen

“The Filament Maker TWO is designed to enable faster R&D, allowing our customers to produce high-quality filaments perfectly suited to their needs,” says Louis Rinaldo, a materials expert with over seven years of experience at 3devo.
He continues, “The Filament Maker TWO addresses the need for stability, efficiency, and customization in filament extrusion. To make a tangible impact in plastic recycling and filament extrusion, 3devo's latest machine is poised to make more material projects successful.
He emphasizes that the new stepper motor provides stable screw rotation, leading to faster stabilization of the molten material flow and reducing the time spent fine-tuning settings.

The machine's design allows for internal maintenance, with easily removable components such as the nozzle and screw.
This facilitates quick troubleshooting and repairs without needing to return the equipment to the manufacturer, reducing downtime and improving long-term reliability.
An open-source API allows users to integrate their own development projects, enabling the system to adapt to future enhancements based on user feedback.

Sensor

The thermal sensor also helps ensure the filament is at the optimal winding temperature.
3devo states that image processing features, expected to be released in 2025, will help users detect defects or flaws.
Users control the machine via a 7-inch touchscreen, with software built on an open-source API.
3devo says internal components are easily accessible for maintenance, replacement, or upgrades.

The device also features advanced data logging capabilities and has been tested with materials such as PLA, ABS, PC, PS, PETG, TPU, TPE, PPS, PVA, PE, PET, PA6, PA12, PA66, PEEK, PEKK, and other PAEK series materials.

Advances in Filament Technology and Drying Solutions
Italian company Xenia Materials is also pushing filament technology forward by launching new high-performance filaments at Formnext 2024.
Xenia's 3DF Materials division, which specializes in thermoplastic composites, introduced four filaments designed for industries requiring lightweight, structural, and sustainable materials.
A notable product is XECARB® SL 3DF, a PA11 composite reinforced with carbon fiber that offers enhanced strength while maintaining low density.
These materials are designed to meet the complex needs of industries like aerospace and automotive, where structural integrity and weight reduction are critical.

German manufacturer BigRep released the DRYCON 3D printing filament dryer, addressing filament quality issues from a different angle.
This new system is suitable for industrial users working with high-performance and moisture-sensitive materials, featuring dual chambers capable of simultaneously drying, storing, and annealing spools and parts.
By maintaining optimal drying conditions, it aims to improve print quality, reduce extrusion problems, and enhance the mechanical strength of printed parts.
The ability to anneal parts directly in the chamber also helps release internal stresses, improving dimensional accuracy and interlayer adhesion.

Meanwhile, 3Devo's Plastic Shredder GP20 can recycle plastics of any shape and size into pellet-sized material for 3D printing.
This dual design combines a smart plastic shredder with an integrated granulator, allowing you to focus on your needs. The shredder's functionality offers the freedom and flexibility to integrate it into any project in any industry.
