[3D Printing Tips] A comprehensive guide to Bambu Lab print beds for 3D printing beginners


High-quality 3D printed objects from FFF/FDM 3D printers require this essential 3D printing accessory - a 3D print bed!
But with so many types, how do you choose? As a beginner to 3D printing, let's explore the common types and differences of print beds using Bambu Lab's print beds as examples:



1️⃣ Cool Plate
The Bambu Cool Plate consists of a cool plate film and a Bambu Engineering Plate, both sides of which can be used for printing.
The cool plate film has a smooth surface and is attached to the engineering plate with 3M high-temperature resistant double-sided adhesive tape.
It is only suitable for printing PLA materials. Printing other materials (such as PETG, ABS) on this plate may cause warping and permanent adhesion issues.

2️⃣ High-Temperature Plate

The Bambu High-Temperature Plate also consists of a high-temperature plate film and an engineering plate, both sides of which can be used for printing.
The high-temperature film has a smooth surface with a fine matte texture and is attached to the engineering plate with 3M high-temperature resistant double-sided adhesive tape. Compared to the PC film of the Cool Plate, PEI material has better heat resistance and is less prone to creep at high temperatures, thus offering better material compatibility.

The engineering plate is created by spraying a layer of special thermosetting coating onto flexible steel. This coating is more robust than PC and PEI films and is ideal for printing engineering materials.
A drawback of this print bed is the strict requirement for adhesive during printing; otherwise, it may lead to insufficient adhesion and print failures.

4️⃣ Dual-Sided Textured PEI Plate
The Dual-Sided Textured PEI Plate is made by powder coating a layer of PEI powder onto a stainless steel plate. Its main feature is a special rough texture on the surface, which it imparts to the bottom of the printed part.
The PEI coating on the dual-sided textured plate is very robust, giving it a long lifespan. A drawback is the rough texture, which may risk flow calibration failure or first layer scan failure.
