【3D Printing Application】 Practical Application of 3D Printed Metal Materials!

This application concept was designed by Steve Cox of AMFORi to demonstrate one of the many ways metal FFF technology can improve existing processes.

Leveraging his experience working with partners across various industries, Steve identified a valuable application that utilizes the unique advantages of metal printing on UltiMaker printers.

Ultimaker metal 3D printed heat exchanger details

Challenge

The larger the surface area of a heat exchanger, the more efficiently it transfers heat. Manufacturing efficient metal heat exchangers in a compact form factor is a challenge with traditional manufacturing techniques.

Solution

Additive manufacturing technologies (FFF/FDM) can create parts with novel internal geometries that are difficult or impossible to produce with traditional methods.

This concept part is a compact, all-in-one heat exchanger for thermal management in the smallest possible form factor; its optimized internal geometry significantly improves efficiency compared to heat exchangers using traditional designs (such as shell-and-tube or plate heat exchangers).

Such complex internal geometries, maximizing surface area, are only achievable through metal 3D printing.

The internal curved fin geometry of this part is designed to maximize the model's surface area, thereby enhancing heat transfer capabilities. The part has virtually no overhangs, eliminating the need for structural support material.

As a result, the part is both reliable and easy to print, while also being easier to post-process. Since it is printed in metal, working at high temperatures is not an issue.
