【3D Printing】LEGO Unveils New Holiday Set, Features First Mass-Produced 3D Printed Brick
LEGO® Icons Holiday Express Train Makes a Dazzling Debut!

The LEGO Group has released its holiday set for this season, a major release in the consumer additive manufacturing (AM) space. One of the sets, named "LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train," features the company's first mass-produced 3D printed component. This functional train combines LEGO connectors with "internal functions that only AM can achieve."
Each year, LEGO's holiday sets are eagerly anticipated, with parents scrambling to purchase them as Christmas gifts, and adult LEGO fans (AFOLs) eager to add them to their collections. This year, we expect the Holiday Express Train set's popularity to extend to another group – 3D printing enthusiasts.

This year, we expect the Holiday Express Train set's popularity to extend to another group – 3D printing enthusiasts.

This 3D printed train is one of the 956 bricks in the LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train set and LEGO's first mass-produced 3D printed product. LEGO stated in its press release, "This set is the perfect finishing touch for holiday decorations, featuring a 16-piece circular track that can be set up on a tabletop or around a Christmas tree. Fans can even power the locomotive with a LEGO Powered Up upgrade kit."
Ronen Hadar, Head of Additive Design and Manufacturing at the LEGO Group, shared more details about this 3D printed train part in a LinkedIn post, including that it is manufactured using an EOS 3D printer based on Fine Detail Resolution (FDR) technology. FDR is a powder-based polymer 3D printing technology that integrates an ultra-fine CO laser for ultra-fine details and high-precision printing. Hadar stated that this system is crucial for achieving "high precision and quality... meeting LEGO's standard quality and safety requirements."

This release marks a significant step for LEGO in the field of 3D printing—a field we have been following for the past few years. In 2022, LEGO released its first official 3D printed piece: a LEGO duck, given as a gift to guests at the LEGO House Adult Fan event. At the time, Hadar stated, "The team has been working with our talented designers to develop, approve, and manufacture this super cool component. This is a significant milestone for the team. We look forward to sharing more in the future." However, this duck was not available for public sale or mass production. In this sense, the holiday train set is an important beginning.
The LEGO Icons Holiday Express Train set (recommended for ages 18+) will be officially available to LEGO Insiders on October 1, 2025, with general release on October 4, 2025. The set will retail for $129.99 (EUR 119.99 / GBP 109.99).
