【3D Printing】Luxembourg's First 3D Printed House

Czech company ICE Industrial Services recently completed Luxembourg's first 3D printed concrete house, a feat that not only showcases the potential of additive manufacturing (AM) technology in the construction sector but also offers an innovative solution to Europe's housing crisis.
Jiří Jílek, Deputy Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Luxembourg, commented, "This house, built using unique 3D printing technology, clearly demonstrates that Czech companies possess significant competitiveness in the Luxembourg market with high-quality and modern engineering projects."
The 56-square-meter house is designed for young couples, featuring essential functional spaces such as a kitchenette, living area, multi-purpose room, bathroom, and hallway. Equipped with solar panels and ten battery storage units, the house achieves almost complete energy self-sufficiency. As a pilot project, the house is priced at approximately 8 million Czech crowns (about 325,000 euros) and has already received over 20 purchase applications, indicating strong market demand.
The construction system used by ICE is based on local mineral materials, ensuring structural performance while offering flexibility and efficiency in construction. The Czech Republic has years of practical experience in 3D printed architecture. As early as 2020, the country unveiled its first 3D printed building, "Prvok," a floating house, and since then, the technology has been gradually applied to more infrastructure projects.
As this pilot project in Luxembourg garners international attention, ICE Industrial Services is actively participating in Europe's transition towards more sustainable, alternative housing solutions. Pavel Zelenka, representative of the Czech Trade Promotion Agency in Belgium and Luxembourg, noted, "The uniqueness of this project lies in its extremely high flexibility and efficiency in terms of time and cost. Luxembourg's selection of this project fully proves the excellent quality of Czech technology."
| Global Development of 3D Printed Architecture
The progress of Czech companies also reflects the global construction industry's trend towards digital construction. In 2024, Portuguese company Havelar announced the completion of the country's first 3D printed house. This 80-square-meter, two-bedroom house, located in the Greater Porto area, was printed in 18 hours using COBOD's BOD2 printer, fully demonstrating the high efficiency of 3D printing technology in construction. The project received support from architects Aires Mateus, Glória Cabral, and Francis Kéré.
Similarly, Buena Vista, Colorado, USA, welcomed its first 3D printed homes. These houses, built by VeroTouch, received $618,000 in funding from the state's "Innovative Housing Incentive Program" (IHIP). Each house covers approximately 109 square meters and is part of the VeroVistas project, built using a patented 3D printing system, emphasizing energy efficiency, structural durability, and fire resistance.
VeroTouch, in collaboration with South Main, plans to construct an additional 31 homes in the Cleora development to test the technology's scalability, automation level, and material usage efficiency in large-scale projects. This project aims to alleviate the housing shortage and improve efficiency in the construction industry through additive manufacturing technology.
