【3D Printing Applications】NTUT Interaction Design Exhibition, Matte Filament Sneak Peek!

【3D Printing Application】NTUT Interaction Design Exhibition, Matte Filaments First Look!

Following the recent Young Designers' Exhibition, we are excited to be heading to Songshan Cultural and Creative Park with National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT)! The graduation exhibition of NTUT's Department of Interaction Design, themed "Interaction Lab," showcases works centered around VR, AR, apps, games, interactive installations, and projection art. What's more, there will be four Ultimaker 3D printers on-site, printing live!

The "Interaction Lab" themed exhibition features many 3D printed abstract spheres, utilizing the light and shadow properties of different filaments to create a sense of movement. Let's now share how these balanced yet abstract spherical particles were created. These particles visually represent agitation and liveliness. Since their basic shape is a perfect circle, we cut them in half for 3D printing, which not only saves a lot of support material but also shortens printing time. 7cm diameter spheres appear tiny in a large Ultimaker S5.

To create the interleaved light and shadow effect, in addition to Ultimaker's black PLA filament, we also used Spider Maker's matte black PLA this time. Practical testing revealed that matte black PLA adheres more tightly to the print bed. Therefore, as you can see in Cura, we added an extra layer of PVA at the bottom for 3D printing. You can also use this little trick like us. (Further reading: Ultimaker Cura: Advanced Tips and Tricks)

Comparing the effects of the two PLAs, the left image below shows the 3D printed product made with matte black, which presents a matte texture and soft light and shadow, without the refracted light seen in the Ultimaker black PLA product on the right. Both filaments have their merits; matte black is more suitable for product properties requiring elegance and low reflectivity, while regular PLA offers the glossy finish of a completed product.

We are honored that the quality of Ultimaker 3D printers has been recognized by many future designers, providing high-quality 3D printing services to create these installations for them. At the exhibition, you can not only touch these physical particles but also witness the live 3D printing process. Only three days left for early bird ticket discounts! Buying tickets now is the most cost-effective way to support the students!
