【3D Printing News】SLS Hexagonal Rubik's Cube is super elastic, bounces back without deformation!
It's been a while since we last shared a look inside the Sinterit Lisa 3D printer. This time, we're 3D printing an infinitely continuous three-dimensional hexagonal structure. It's incredibly bouncy when pressed by hand, and it springs back without deforming. How is such a complex hollow structure achieved? Let's take a look together!

After opening, there will be two powder hoppers inside. After cleaning the powder hoppers with a vacuum cleaner, you can pour in the printing powder you want to use. This time, we are using Flexa Grey flexible gray powder, which has the soft and elastic characteristics of TPU, making it suitable for parts such as stoppers, cushions, gaskets, etc. Although both are TPU, the performance of products from FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) and SLA (Stereolithography) differs due to the molding technology. Among them, SLS is closest to fabric or natural texture. (Further reading: Farewell My Concubine: The World's First 3D-Printed Peking Opera Costume!)

The print bed on the right does not need to be filled with powder. When the machine is enclosed and performing 3D printing, powder will be covered layer by layer through the powder inlet on the left. After filling is complete, simply follow the instructions on the Sinterit Lisa to start printing, and it will automatically finish! After completion and opening, the 3D printing powder and the finished product will all move to the print bed on the right. The bed will raise the completed powder block, and you can scoop it out with a dedicated scraper.

Next, you can peel off large chunks of the solidified powder by hand! As the loose powder clears, the product's shape gradually emerges. Due to the elasticity of the flexible material, pressing it while cleaning helps to clean the interior more quickly.

Finally, we use a brush and an air gun to clean off any residual powder. Because SLS technology uses laser melting instead of binder jetting, the finished product will not shed powder after being cleaned.

The matte texture of the finished product makes this cube feel even softer. No matter how much it's handled, it bounces back to its original shape, making it very suitable for testing parts that undergo repetitive motion.
