【3D Printing】Affordable Multi-Color Printing! Snapmaker U1 Unboxing

Snapmaker U1: An affordable and easy-to-operate 3D printer with an automatic tool changer.
For multi-material 3D printing, automatic nozzle changers are a new generation of products, as each spool has its own dedicated filament path and tool head.
This greatly reduces color change time, requires almost no material cleanup, and allows you to print with multiple materials simultaneously.

Compared to previous products, Snapmaker has completely redesigned the U1.
This device uses Klipper and OrcaSlicer software, addressing many pain points that existed with previous Snapmaker machines.

Automatic nozzle changers are complex mechanical systems, and previously, their price was quite high for many consumer-level makers.
Snapmaker has launched the U1, a machine everyone has dreamed of.

Unboxing
The Snapmaker U1 is slightly larger than average, with a print size of 270 x 270 x 270 mm, and is only sold with all four tool heads.
It requires almost no assembly. You just need to install the tool heads and spool holders in place, then connect the tubes and cables. Its assembly method is no different from any other modern Core XY printer.
Unlike previous Snapmaker 3D printers, the U1's packaging is very streamlined, including only a basic set of tools, accessories, and a spare nozzle.

Snapmaker U1

This machine has a sleek and modern design.
The X-axis uses carbon fiber rods, making it flexible; lightweight parts also effectively reduce costs.
Die-cast aluminum and sheet metal are used where needed to ensure the machine's precision.

Snapmaker U1

The Snapmaker U1's steel nozzle can easily handle abrasive materials, with a maximum temperature of 300°C. With a 100°C heated bed and an optional top cover, the U1 can handle almost any material.
The machine body adopts a semi-enclosed design with a transparent back panel and front door.
The U1 is equipped with a "chamber" thermometer to monitor internal temperature, but currently has no active heating function.

Snapmaker U1

The U1's spools are mounted in pairs on both sides of the machine and are equipped with an automatic feeding system that transports the filament through extra-wide tubing to the tool head.
This makes loading extremely convenient. Since the filament is always loaded during use, there is no need for a reverse feeding system; the filament can simply be removed manually.
This not only saves costs but also eliminates a moving part that could fail.
The spool holders have spring arms to clamp the spools, but they rotate freely without motor drive.

Snapmaker U1

The U1's PEI-coated flexible print platform is double-sided and very thick.
The magnets fixed to the heated bed are also super strong – this platform will definitely not come loose.

Snapmaker U1

When not in use, the tool heads are stored at the rear of the machine, next to a debris tray that collects small fragments generated when loading filament.
Each tool head is a complete system, equipped with an independent wiper and nozzle pad to prevent filament overflow.
The tool heads maintain temperature as needed, so the delay between tool head changes is short, even including nozzle preheating time, it only takes about 10 seconds.

Usage
The Snapmaker U1 uses an eddy current sensor for tool head calibration.
This means that tool head calibration is completely hands-off and highly accurate.
If you want to save time, you can disable automatic bed leveling before printing.

The Snapmaker U1 uses the open-source Orca Slicer slicing software, which is a good thing.
This software is a fork of Bambu Slicer (which itself is based on PrusaSlicer) and has a good reputation.
For those who have used modern 3D printers, the Orca Slicer interface should be familiar and easy to learn for beginners.

Snapmaker U1

The U1 also has a LAN mode, and if you want to skip cloud services, it can also run Klipper, giving you full access to the Fluid interface.

The Snapmaker U1 has a fully hands-off automatic bed leveling calibration system.
It also uses eddy current sensors for tool head alignment, so no special calibration steps are required.
Once set up, the machine performs a full calibration, including input shaping vibration tests.

Snapmaker U1

Loading filament in the Snapmaker U1 is very simple, convenient, and automatic.
If a tool head is empty, simply place the spool on the holder and insert the end of the spool into the feeder.
Snapmaker branded filaments have RFID tags that automatically select the correct type and color.
Third-party filaments need to be manually identified on the touchscreen.

There's a convenient guide on the screen if you need help.

Conclusion

The Snapmaker U1 is definitely the affordable multi-color 3D printer consumers have been waiting for.
It combines speed, precision, and material cost savings.

Snapmaker has clearly completely redesigned the U1, as it bears almost no resemblance to previous models.
The U1 uses open-source Klipper and OrcaSlicer slicing software, addressing many issues users encountered with the Artisan and J1 series.

Snapmaker U1

In terms of performance, the U1 can print clean, colorful models faster, thanks to its tool changes that take only a few seconds, compared to minutes for other printers.
The U1's retail price is very cost-effective, saving time and materials for advanced users.
The U1's reliability and ease of use make it one of the best multi-color 3D printers on the market.
