[3D Printing Applications] Fashion Week 3D Print: Breathable Sportswear, No Cutting, Zero Waste!

【3D Printing Application】Fashion Week 3D Print: Breathable Sportswear, No Cutting, Zero Waste!

Fashion brand "ZER Collection" showcased 12 3D-printed garments at Madrid Fashion Week 2020. Utilizing 3D printing technology, the clothing not only achieved a "fashionable and aesthetic" effect but also possessed "breathable" and "elastic" athletic functionality. Through digital production, they also successfully addressed the waste problem in traditional clothing design, where up to 30% of fabric is cut and discarded:

.Elastic Fabric 3D Printed for Breathable, Comfortable, and Stylish Wear
The "ZER Collection" team utilized 3D printing technology to design two types of fabrics for their works: base and decorative. The base fabric was not made by connecting tiny parts but directly 3D printed as elastic fabric. As this fabric directly touches the body, the team considered wearability and comfort, specifically choosing TPU flexible filament to produce the base material for each garment.

The decorative designs on the clothing surface can also be created using 3D printing, combining with fabrics such as cotton, knit, and silk to design various structural shapes. This maintains the model's body curves while offering breathability and fabric resilience, ensuring comfortable wear for extended periods.

The team primarily uses the IDEX independent dual extruders technology of the BCN3D 3D printer to produce garment accessories. The equipment features two completely separate extruder systems that can move independently without interfering with each other. This allows for printing two different colors or materials on fabric at once, speeding up the efficiency of each 3D printing job and saving time spent on repeated testing and revising designer concepts. .Print Only What's Needed, No Cutting, Zero Waste
According to brand founder and designer Núria Costa, typically up to 30% of fabric used in the clothing design process is cut off, leading to significant material waste over time. However, by incorporating 3D printing technology, only the "required" fabric is produced each time, which not only eliminates fabric trimming and increases efficiency but also results in zero material waste!

Furthermore, to reduce material waste, the "ZER Collection" team recycled all previously used old clothing and fabrics, melting the plastic into recycled 3D printing filament for use in new products. Through 3D printing technology, they not only promote sustainability in the fashion industry but also continue their research, striving for the goal of designing every garment without generating any waste!

"ZER Collection" continues to develop methods for integrating fashion with new technologies, hoping to incorporate laser cutting and human 3D scanning, in addition to 3D printing technology, into clothing production in the future. As technology continuously advances, it's exciting to see more and more fields combining different technologies with their respective expertise and passion to create higher brand value.
