Workflow for 3D Printing Investment Casting Patterns
3D printed patterns can directly replace wax patterns commonly used in investment casting, enabling the casting of complex geometries without dedicated molds and accelerating iteration speed.
The process for producing 3D printed patterns typically involves the following steps:
1. Use tools like Materialise Magics or Formware to shell and lattice the part and add drain holes.
2. Orient, support, and slice the pattern in PreForm.
3. Print the pattern.
4. Wash, post-cure, and remove supports.
5. Seal all drain holes with wax, or cure a small amount of clear resin over the holes.
6. Mount the pattern to a casting tree and proceed with the remaining casting steps.
▶ Why choose Castable Resin (Clear)?
Castable Resin (Clear) is a resin specifically designed for investment casting, allowing direct printing of patterns for investment casting. It features an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion, low ash content, and no heavy metal traces.
Castable Resin (Clear) is recommended for use with lattice software for larger parts, and is particularly adept at geometries thicker than 3mm.

Convenient In-House Pattern Production
Using Castable Resin (Clear) on Formlabs SLA printers allows for in-house production of casting patterns, reducing costs, shortening turnaround times, and increasing flexibility for iterations and production.
Low Coefficient of Thermal Expansion
Best-in-class thermal expansion properties create reliable investment shells and minimize cracking.
Clean Burnout
Castable Resin (Clear) burns out completely with low ash content and no metallic residue, preventing contamination of the final casting. Castable Resin (Clear) is completely antimony-free.
Precise and Versatile
Capable of creating precise patterns with design tolerances within 0.25mm. Compatible with any metal or shell system, enabling foundries to cast new designs in record time.
